Book Week in the Primary School

“From then on, Matilda would visit the library only once a week in order to take out new books and return the old ones. Her own small bedroom now became her reading-room and there she would sit and read most afternoons, often with a mug of hot chocolate beside her … The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”

– Roald Dahl, author of Matilda

As we enter the middle weeks of Term 3, excitement is mounting for our Book Week celebrations across the Primary School coming up in Week 7. The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week celebrates literary adventures for all ages and is organised behind the scenes by our wonderful Librarian, Cheryl Sharkey. The annual CBCA Book Week has been running since 1945 and acknowledges the work of esteemed Australian children’s book authors and illustrators. This year’s theme is “Dreaming With Eyes Open” and our students and teachers have been encouraged to think broadly about what this theme means to them.

This year we welcome back the traditional Costume Parade and assembly for Years 1 to 6, where students and teachers have an opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character. We also welcome two guest speakers, Lucas Proudfoot and Shane Walsh-Smith, with performances and writers’ workshops for our Lower and Upper Primary School students. Students will also share buddy reading time together and opportunities to swap books at our fundraising Book Swap. Students and families are also asked to bring in a gold coin donation to raise funds for Waldorf schools in Ukraine. The Book Fair returns to the Library this year with opportunities to purchase books supplied by The Book Cow in Kingston before and after school. Lastly, the ‘Guess The Teacher’ daydream competition in the Library is sure to be a hit with all our Primary School students as they guess each teacher’s daydream adventure.

We hope all our students enjoy all the exciting Book Week celebrations next week!
