Class 5 Greek Olympics

Beauty and grace, strength and skill, determination and Olympic spirit

“We have trained our minds and bodies for Olympia

We have been neither lazy nor acted dishonourably.

We will go forward and compete before the gods

With courage and honour”

In Greek city states and in friendship, these words encouraged the 65 children from Orana, Aurora Steiner School in Bowral, The Alpine School in Cooma and Mumbulla School for Rudolf Steiner Education in Bega at Westwood Lodge. Over the next day and a half the children competed in discus, long jump, javelin, running and ancient Greek wrestling. Awards in the form of friendship bands were given for grace and beauty, skill and strength, determination and Olympic spirit.

Over the past few months, our Class Five children have followed a long tradition of Steiner schools across the world by preparing to compete in these games. From friendship band making, to tunic band painting and learning their Greek city state verse by heart, our Olympians were truly ready to lead their teams into a rigorous competition. Our heartfelt thanks go to Michael Klinkert, Sports Coordinator, and Kelly Armstrong, Class 5 PE Teacher, who trained the children and ran the events. We also thank Shelby, Class 5 Teacher, and all the teachers involved from the participating schools. A special thanks for all their hard work and efforts to the Year 9, 10 and Senior College student marshals, for without them the Olympic events would not have run as smoothly.
