A Fraction of Pizza

Over this last week of term, Shelby’s Class 4 students were busy planning for and making pizzas from scratch as part of their Main Lesson. They tallied their topping choices for pizza and turned their data into fractions and a pie graph. As a class, they decided on two slices each, so they had to times their original fraction numerators and denominators by two. They were excited to use their equivalent fraction knowledge in a real-life context. As the number of children in the class is odd, the real challenge began as they had to make our four pizzas have nine slices each. They worked very hard to calculate the amount of pizza toppings they needed per pizza. Two of the pizzas ended up having two different toppings and different amounts of slices required for each. They did a fantastic job turning their plans into reality, and they all enjoyed two slices of pizza for recess.
