We are blessed to have a very active and engaged P&F Association at Orana and they recently hosted a community lecture on ‘Simplicity Parenting’ as well as a Meet and Greet, Shop sale and afternoon tea.
Kim John Payne M.ED Lecture and Q&A
The Orana Parents and Friends Committee (P&F) engaged Kim John Payne M.ED, Director of ‘The Centre for Social Sustainability’ and author of ‘Simplicity Parenting’ amongst other books, to conduct a community lecture, followed by a Q&A on the 6th of May. 68 tickets were sold for the online event, one of the largest in the P&F’s history!
Kim has provided permission for the P&F to share the recording to our community. Those who purchased a ticket to the lecture on 6 May, will receive the link within the next week, and those wanting to purchase a copy of the recording for a small fee, please email pfpresident@oranaschool.com. There will also be some of Kim’s books available for purchase at the School Shop from next week.
Thank you to Principal James for his introduction and kind words, Miranda, the P&F’s Orana Parent Education Group Coordinator, and the IT team, Joe and Rahul for their hard work in preparing this seamless live online event for the P&F.
P&F Meet and Greet, School Shop Sale and Mother's Day/Care for your Carer Afternoon Tea
A Meet & Greet with the P&F and Shop Sale was held on the 8th of May, with a complimentary afternoon tea. Three Orana teachers of Vietnamese heritage came along to address the community and speak about the Vietnamese decorations outside the School Shop, their culture, traditions, and delicious food. Orana’s wonderful language teacher, Kim also made some traditional Vietnamese spring rolls and rice snacks called cơm cháy for everyone to try. The P&F also had on offer, a range of Mother’s Day/Care for your Carer Hampers for sale.
Vietnamese Decorations at the P&F School Shop
You may have noticed a ‘Friend of the P&F’, Rosa has been decorating outside the School Shop to celebrate different cultures at Orana. So far, she has displayed decorations for Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day and most recently, Vietnamese items to celebrate the mid-year festival and dragon boat. This wonderful new incentive has been very well received and will continue throughout the year. We have engaged with some classes and staff so they can come to visit, take photographs, and learn more about different cultures. A special thanks to Rosa for the beautiful decorations, and teacher’s Katie, Kim and Brandon for attending and speaking at the Meet and Greet about their Vietnamese heritage. It was also an honour to find out we are the first School in Canberra to provide the Vietnamese language to our students.
The P&F encourages students and families to reach out if they have a favourite cultural study they are currently doing or have done at Orana. You can email oranaschoolshop@outlook.com with any ideas.
