Utensils & Medieval Woodwork

Our Class 6 students have been working with the fragrant Huon Pine which is a beautiful timber to carve with. Their woodwork and carving skills are growing as you can see in these fantastically carved spoons and decorative knife.

Class 7 have been exploring the dying art of coopering. The students have been using this technique to create curved shields with wonderful results.

‘People who are unable to use their hands skillfully for all kinds of work, will not become good thinkers and will behave awkwardly in life. It is not the head alone, but the whole human being that is the logician, you require your hands and heart to be also involved. Activities demanding manual and bodily skill, such as woodwork, lead to the enhancement of the faculty of judgement. This faculty is actually developed least of all by exercises in logic. In this sense, too, the intellect awakens during the practical work of the hands.’ Rudolf Steiner
